Voice Tuning Lab is a local web app I built to improve the writing instructions I give AI assistants. It presents several drafts of the same piece and records which versions I prefer.
Improving the instructions behind the writing
I can edit a draft, score it, mark exact words to keep or remove, and explain a choice. Those decisions provide examples for revising the instructions.
It grew out of my evaluation work: reading closely, comparing outputs, and explaining what needs to change.
Three drafts, side by side
Each page puts three drafts next to one another. I can select more than one useful version, or reject all three. Scores, edits, and phrase selections capture different parts of the decision.
The comparisons help me describe specific preferences, such as a sentence that runs too long or an opening that sounds too polished.
Preferences depend on the task
The lab tracks whether a preference repeats across different kinds of writing. A choice from one technical explanation should not automatically become a rule for a cover letter or a casual message.
It records conflicting feedback and leaves unsettled questions open. Once there is enough consistent evidence, it proposes changes to the writing instructions for review.
